Job Description

The Desert Research Institute (DRI; www.dri.edu) in Las Vegas, NV, in partnership with the Department of Biology Graduate Program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), invite applications for graduate studies (Masters or PhD program) beginning in Fall of 2020.

The student will join an international team that includes scientists from the NASA Ames Research Center, the University of Patras in Greece, as well as DRI, to study the tolerance of desert lichens, mosses, and cyanobacteria to UVC and oxidation and to use the results to assess the habitability of Mars. The graduate student will enroll in the Department of Biology at University of Nevada Las Vegas while conducting research at DRI and, for a period of time, at University of Patras. Coursework, academic advisement and degree will be provided through UNLV.

Graduate Research Assistants work 50% time during the academic year, with the option to work more during winter and summer breaks. Hourly employment prior to enrollment in graduate school is also possible.

Required Qualifications
  • Acceptance into UNLV’s Masters or PhD granting program for plant physiology, biochemistry or microbiology and registered for a minimum of six graduate credits per semester
  • Ability to work independently and must enjoy interdisciplinary research
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills
Conditions of Employment
  • All positions are contingent upon available funding from your DRI advisor’s research projects and may be terminated for lack of funding or performance.
  • Candidates will complete an application to UNLV’s Department of Biology which will include a CV, statement of interest, transcripts, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation from three references.
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

DRI offers a competitive support package, which includes a monthly stipend and access to student health services. A grant-in-aid waiver covers a portion of tuition/per credit costs.
